What kind of insurance do Mississippi contractors need?

There is no blanket coverage called contractors insurance. Most contractors need a Business Owners Policy (BOP) tailored to their specific needs including coverage for general liability and commercial property (tools and equipment). A contractor’s BOP might include any or all of these coverages:

Tools & Equipment

Covers your tools and equipment in case of damage or theft.

Property

Contract penalty

Covers the cost if a project is not completed in the time set out in a contract and the customer wants to collect on a “penalty clause” for each day that the project is late.

Identity theft recovery

Covers you in the event you’re a victim of identity theft.

Installation

Covers materials while in-transit, stored at a temporary location, or at the customer location prior to installation.

Liability

Contractors errors & omissions (E&O)

Also called professional liability insurance, it covers lawsuits that claim you or your employees made mistakes or were negligent. For example, if someone sues you claiming you didn’t finish the job.

Employment practice liability (EPL)

Covers you if an employee claims discrimination (based on sex, race, age, disability, etc.), wrongful termination, harassment, or other employment-related issues.

Property damage – borrowed equipment

Coverage for equipment or tools rented or borrowed by you or your employees. Depending on your policy, the equipment might not be covered when it’s not in use on the job site.

Property damage – customers’ goods

Covers your customers’ property while on your premises to be worked on or used in your building or manufacturing process.
